Whereas a directory is a named storage location for related files in a storage media, its viewed by the operating systems as a a special file that contains a list of file names plus pointers to associated i-nodes that is accessible by various file management routines. So, file systems typically have directories (also called folders) which allow the user to group files into separate collections. Therefore, associated with any file management system and collection of files is a file directory. To keep track of files, file systems normally have directories or folders, which, in many systems, are themselves files. For this reason, files are usually arranged in directories or folders, and the file system specifies the arrangement of the files in the System.
