New species of beetle discovered in the Columbia River Gorge | Oregon Field Guide

Описание к видео New species of beetle discovered in the Columbia River Gorge | Oregon Field Guide

In 2017, Oregon State University scientist Chris Marshall discovered a new species of rain beetle living in the Columbia River Gorge. Finding them took time and patience because rain beetles, or Pleocomidae, spend their whole lives underground. They generally only emerge during fall’s first big rains when they come out to mate. Marshall discovered that these beetles emerged to mate in the spring, rather than the fall when other rain beetles typically mate. But to date, little else is known about their life history. This story originally aired on Oct. 19, 2017.
