The GOP argued that state law only permits physical forms of ID for voting, but the court sided with the North Carolina State Board of Elections, confirming that the digital IDs meet all legal requirements.

The ruling provides greater voting flexibility for UNC students, especially out-of-state students without in-state driver’s licenses. With this decision, both physical and digital IDs will be accepted, marking a win for accessibility as North Carolina prepares for pivotal upcoming elections. The ruling comes amid several other legal challenges by Republicans aimed at restricting voter access in the state ahead of the 2024 election.
