Did you know that renowned composer Danny Elfman has a huge collection of vintage percussion instruments from around the world? After visiting West Africa and becoming inspired by the balafon instruments he saw there, he and his bandmates in the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo built their own custom collection of balafons. He also spent time playing in the gamelan at CalArts, even though he was not a student there. These influences are clear throughout his Percussion Quartet.
