One of my favorite routes this summer has been to run Hickory Valley Road. To get to it, you have to run through town on Wente Rd. It will change from pavement to gravel, treating you to rolling hills of corn and cows. There's a couple of dogs that live on one of the farms on this route. The dogs love me, but I suspect that their owner considers me a nuisance. She has to keep coming out to retrieve her dogs from greeting me, otherwise one of them will follow me on the run for miles. "That dog loves to run," she tells me. I know this to be true.
At a stop sign in the middle of nowhere that no one ever stops at, make the left to get on to Hickory Valley. It's not much of a valley and there are no hickory trees as far as I can tell, but it cuts through what would otherwise be an uninterrupted and endless horizon. At the top of the second hill, make a left onto New Vienna Rd. That will take you back in to town.
Total distance is about 11 miles. Elevation gain is about 550 feet.
