A recent RTI has revealed that the Indian government spent around ₹304 crore in the last three years on the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) website. This amount was spent on development, maintenance, and related digital services to keep the portal running for millions of EPF account holders across the country.

Despite such massive expenditure, the EPFO website has continued to face regular issues. Users frequently complain about slow loading times, login failures, and unresponsive pages, especially during peak periods like claim submissions, balance checks, and monthly contributions. Many employees and pensioners are unable to access their passbooks or submit claims without repeated attempts or visiting the EPFO office physically, defeating the purpose of online governance.

This is not an isolated instance. Over the years, several government websites have witnessed enormous spending but often do not function up to the mark. Technical glitches, outdated interfaces, security vulnerabilities, and poor server infrastructure continue to plague these portals. While governments argue that these costs include cybersecurity, software upgrades, and server scalability, the final user experience rarely reflects such heavy investments.

The core issue lies in the lack of accountability and quality standards in public digital projects. When a government website is developed, its real measure of success is its seamless usability, security, and accessibility for the common citizen. Without these, even hundreds of crores spent become mere statistics with little value for the people they were intended to serve.
