Tesla continues to expand its electric SUV portfolio, and the latest addition is the Model Y L, a long-wheelbase version of the company’s best-selling crossover. Designed primarily for the Chinese market where long-wheelbase vehicles are a huge trend, the Model Y L isn’t just about extra space. It brings a six-seat layout, upgraded technology, and a premium feel aimed at families who want more comfort without sacrificing performance.

Starting with the dimensions, the Tesla Model Y L stretches to 195.9 inches in length, making it about 7 inches longer than the regular Model Y. It also stands slightly taller at 65.7 inches, while its width remains at 83.8 inches. These changes give the crossover a more imposing road presence, and the added size translates directly into improved interior space.

Visually, the Model Y L is still very recognizable as part of the Tesla lineup. However, subtle design updates distinguish it from the standard model. These include a revised greenhouse, longer rear doors for easier access, unique 19-inch wheels, and a more pronounced rear spoiler that enhances both aesthetics and aerodynamics.

Inside is where the Model Y L really shines. Tesla has swapped out the familiar 15.4-inch infotainment screen for a larger 16-inch display that anchors the cabin. The second row features captain’s chairs with heating, ventilation, and power-folding armrests, making it clear that this SUV is designed for passenger comfort. These chairs can fold with the touch of a button, creating flexible space configurations. Behind them, the third-row seats are heated as well, though they are a bit tight for adults. Still, they fold flat electronically, opening up a massive 89.7 cubic feet of cargo space—over 14 cubic feet more than the standard Model Y.

Tesla also ensures that passengers enjoy a premium atmosphere with features like a panoramic glass roof, acoustic glass for reduced noise, an 18-speaker audio system, and even an 8-inch rear display for entertainment or controls. Rear passengers also get dedicated air vents and cup holders, further elevating the family-friendly appeal of this model.

Performance has not been ignored despite the increase in size and weight. The Model Y L uses a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system and delivers a CLTC range of 467 miles, which is impressive for a vehicle of its size. Acceleration remains strong, with a 0-62 mph time of 4.5 seconds. That’s only 0.2 seconds slower than the standard Model Y, a trade-off most buyers will happily accept given the extra comfort and space.

The added length and luxury features mean the Model Y L is heavier, tipping the scales at 4,603 pounds —an increase of about 212 pounds. To compensate, Tesla has equipped it with an upgraded suspension system that ensures smooth and precise handling, whether cornering or driving across varied terrains.

When it comes to safety and technology, Tesla doesn’t disappoint. The Model Y L includes Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, and Lane Departure Prevention as standard. Buyers can also opt for Tesla’s advanced driver-assistance packages to unlock more autonomous features.

Price-wise, the Model Y L starts at ¥339,000 in China. That’s only about ¥25,500 more than the regular all-wheel-drive Model Y, making it an appealing option for families looking for more versatility without a huge jump in cost.

With its larger dimensions, luxurious six-seat layout, and long driving range, the Tesla Model Y L demonstrates how Tesla is adapting its lineup for global markets and family needs. While currently aimed at China, it represents Tesla’s ongoing strategy to blend practicality with EV innovation, and it could signal more family-oriented Tesla models in the future.
