London Zoo has moved its two capybaras, Gizmo and Kiwi, into a brand-new, spa-themed permanent enclosure designed to match their natural, semi-aquatic lifestyle. The upgraded habitat includes two large pools, a mud wallow, UV lighting, and a climate-controlled indoor zone — creating an enriched and comfortable environment for the world’s largest rodent species.

To ensure a stress-free move, zookeepers trained the capybaras for days to confidently enter their crates by offering breakfast inside them. Thanks to this training, the five-minute relocation went smoothly. Once inside their new enclosure, Gizmo and Kiwi immediately began exploring — swimming, munching plants, and rolling in the mud wallow.

While Gizmo is the confident and dominant sibling, Kiwi is calmer and an even bigger foodie. The habitat designers say the new enclosure supports their natural behaviors and promotes an active lifestyle.

The zoo also aims to educate visitors about the rising trend of exotic pet ownership, stressing that capybaras do not belong inside homes, as their biological and behavioral needs require a naturalistic space like this.

This new spa-inspired enclosure not only enhances the lives of Gizmo and Kiwi but also offers visitors a closer look at these fascinating animals — and a deeper understanding of wildlife conservation needs.
