Wild dogs are generally divided into foxes, jackals, dingoes, coyotes, dogs, and wolves.

The Red Fox is the largest of the fox species. The Red Fox has the largest natural distribution of any land animal after humans. It ranges throughout Europe, Asia, Northern Africa and most of North America. It is also an invasive species in Australia. Red Foxes adapt well to human presence and can be found in cities and suburbs. The Red Fox is a symbol of cunning and is the subject in much folklore.

The Black-backed Jackal is one of 3 jackal sub-species and lives in the woodlands and savannahs of Africa. The Black-backed Jackal will live alone, in pairs or in packs. It hunts at night and is omnivorous and will feed on small animals, plant material or carrion. Jackals will hunt larger prey like antelope when hunting in packs.

The Dingo is native to Australia and has a lineage of around 4500 years. Dingoes hunt alone or in small groups. Groups usually consist of family members and resemble groups of other wild dogs such as wolves. Dingoes are mobile and may roam 10 to 20 kilometers a day.

The Coyote is native to North America and has 19 sub-species. Coyotes can run up to 40 mph and are excellent swimmers. Coyotes live in the wild and have also adapted to urban areas. Coyotes will hunt alone for smaller prey and will hunt in packs for larger prey.

The African Wild Dog is native to sub-saharan Africa. African Wild Dogs hunt in packs and have an 80% success rate which is the highest rate for any large predator. African Wild Dogs are an endangered species due mainly to habitat loss from expanding human activities.

The Grey Wolf is the largest wild dog and is native to North America, Europe and Asia. Grey Wolves hunt in packs and a pack is typically a family group with an alpha male, an alpha female, and their offspring. The Grey Wolf is the ancestor of the domestic dog.
