Some of my earliest memories were of the coal trucks, as we lived at Glenmore along the “Coal Road”. I’d hear Dad start the truck each morning at 4am, and the rumble would grow louder as more trucks joined in with the morning.
Like many kids whose fathers drove coal trucks, we all, at some point, did a load — and had to duck if one of the bosses drove past. Again, lots of good memories going out to each pit. (Valley 3 was my favourite.)
Watching these videos while putting this mash-up of clips together really brings home how crazy and risky it was driving coal trucks out of the valley back in the day.
