Delicious food. Spectacular desserts. Good hospitality. And a quiet, green setting right in the heart of urban Margao. Our gang of four had a jolly time at Lauriana restaurant last Sunday.

Near BM Service Station, opposite Pilar Music School, Borda, Margao, South Goa
Timings: 11 am to 3.30 pm, 7 to 11 pm; Tuesdays CLOSED

The Fernandes family’s Lauriana restaurant is located in Borda, Margao. Continue straight past Holy Spirit Church and turn left at Borda garden, opposite Sat Burzam Ghor. Follow the road till you see the yellow and red board for Lauriana, opposite the Pilar fathers’ Music Academy. Turn left, and you’ll see Lauriana at the end of this small street. You can park along the wall, near the main road, to avoid blocking the narrow lane.

As it was a pleasant August afternoon, we opted to sit outside. But at Lauriana, you can also sit in the inside section, with its impressive collection of old buiaos and garrafaos, and tempting photos of the special large platters that are a signature of Lauriana. There’s live music here on Saturday nights.

While there is so much that’s tempting on the menu, it was the less common items like beef cafreal and chicken rechead fry that caught our attention. We had these with pork amsol (solantulem). There are even more interesting and uncommon items which we’ll have to come back and try some time.

Without intending it, we have ordered ourselves a very colourful Sunday lunch. And we are dying to eat all of it.

While we were dining, owner Edwin Fernandes stopped by to greet us. Lauriana was founded by Edwin’s parents more than 25 years ago, and is now being run by their three sons, Edwin, Griffin and Franzie. Lauriana was their mother and it is her recipes which we are enjoying today.

We finished with a sweet touch: A creme brulee, or French burnt caramel pudding, and a traditional Goan caramel custard.

We'll be back to try those large platters soon.
