When you ask someone to speak about their actions or behaviours, you have to be aware of the bias that they're presenting. This is especially true for purchasing behaviours.

If someone has bought a product, they do not want to paint themselves in a poor light. Even unintentionally. So it can help to understand one's feelings on a particular product, brand or service by removing that person from the discussion.

Using the third person is a great way to allow people to freely talk about attitudes that they would not necessarily admit to holding themselves.

This works in both online and offline. It's useful for Qualitative, UX, Ethnographic and Strategy work.
