How America Lost Control of Immigration Policy

Описание к видео How America Lost Control of Immigration Policy

It’s now commonplace to hear the situation at America’s southern border referred to as a “crisis.” But that’s not quite right. In reality, the situation at the border is the result of multiple crises all happening at the same time — and the consequence has been America losing control of its immigration policy.

In 2019, the Border Patrol encountered about 850,000 people trying to illegally cross into the United States from Mexico. By 2023, that number had climbed … to over 2 million.

While our stereotypes of border crossings often revolve around people trying to sneak over the border undetected, that view is largely outdated. Today, the biggest issue is people who are trying to get caught so they can claim asylum status, a special legal protection for people who would be persecuted if sent back home.

The consequences of these huge population flows — backlogged immigration courts, an under-resourced Border Patrol, a lack of diplomatic agreements with many of the countries migrants are coming from — have led to a system that’s overwhelmed.
