March 18th. This week, I started on the first major challenge in turning the old garden shed into a livable space: water runoff. The building sits at the base of a hill—definitely not ideal. Every time it rains, water, silt, and debris rush down and collect at the back of the shed. I’m concerned about the long term foundation problems.
In a perfect world, I’d move the structure altogether. But for now, that’s not an option (financially or logistically) So I’ve got to work with what I have.
After going back and forth on solutions, I decided to install a French drain. Seems pretty simple: dig a trench, lay in perforated pipe wrapped in landscape fabric, and cover it all in gravel to redirect the water away from the shed.
Day one started strong. I dug most of the trench by hand. The spring weather was beautiful, but the compacted clay slowed me down—and then I hit a rock. A stubborn one. For a while I daydreamed about renting a jackhammer, but I kept chipping away until sundown.
I had hoped to finish the whole trench in one day. Wrong. I was completely spent by evening, so I called it and made dinner.

March 19th. Day two was better. The rest of the trench went in smoothly, and by noon it was dug. Gravel arrived in the afternoon, and I laid down a base layer, then installed the perforated pipe—four 10-foot sections with “socks” to keep the silt out. Not the easiest thing to wrestle with, but it worked.
By late afternoon, I had covered the pipe with more gravel and tucked everything in with landscape fabric. I was nervous I hadn’t ordered enough stone, but somehow—by luck or instinct—it turned out to be the perfect amount.
Is it perfect? Definitely not. I wish I could have gone a little deeper in that back corner, but the rock had other plans. Still, it’s in, and with rain on the forecast, I’ll soon find out if it works.
