You must have heard of swine flu, avian flu, and of course COVID19...Now lets see what is MONKEY FEVER...is it from monkeys??..Will it spread to humans?? Is it dangerous or fatal??
It is a Viral Hemorrhagic fever caused by a virus referred to as KFD Virus.It is spread by forest ticks, Haemaphysalis spinigera..the tick in its nymph stage infects MONKEYS..The infected, sick or dead monkeys and pass it on to humans..There is no human to human transmission..humans are dead end hosts..
Fatality rate is 3-10 %
The person may recover in 2 weeks, but convalescent period may take months..due to severe muscle ache and weakness..
It was first identified in Kyasanur forests of Shimoga, Karnataka, India and was confined to these forests for decades..but now has spread to other neighbouring states of Western Ghats ..Maharashtra, Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu..
Since 1990, in all KFD endemic areas of Karnataka, the State government has initiated vaccination campaign using formalin-inactivated tissue-culture vaccine.
Vaccination is usually carried out within a range of 5 km of the affected area. Two doses of vaccine are administered to individuals aged 7-65 years at an interval of one month followed by periodic boosters after 6-9 months.There is a need for booster doses annually for five years.
Owing to fears that the KFD vaccine will result in loss of hair and muscle pain, many people in rural areas have been showing reluctance to get themselves vaccinated. . Both left-out and drop-out phenomena were observed in KFD vaccination campaigns..
To control KFDV, systematic efforts are needed to improve the current vaccine and vaccine coverage..Lockdown model isolation in the colonies near to forests were implemented by district administration in Wayanad, Kerala to control the situation..
This year in Wayanad, Kerala 24 cases were reported and 3 people officially died of the disease ..
