Welcome to my first video of 2021, and my first new content for six months. Back in January the Severn Valley Railway took a bold step of announcing a 'Spring Steam Up' event to be held over four days Thursday to Sunday 16th-18th April. The event promised a Covid safe event, allocated seating with seven locos sharing four trains so each loco hauled each train, time at the engine house and the bonus of a mystery VIP guest. This was bold because the railway, and indeed the country, was closed and in the middle of lockdown three as the Covid-19 pandemic continued. But with hope on the horizon in the form of the incredible vaccination effort the event was announced and we, like many others booked, at the time more in hope than expectation for us at least.

The promise of the event on the horizon for me, and I am sure many others, kept me going through the three months leading up to the event. Good news kept coming with first the announcement that VIP guest was Saint no.2999 'Lady of Legend' from Didcot, making her first runs away from the short demonstration line, then the big news - the governments road map meant the event started four days after restrictions were due to be lifted enough to allow the Severn Valley to open and the event to run. There were a few changes, the Engine House at Highley was not permitted to open until May so trains no longer stopped there and for us hotels being unable to accommodate stays for leisure until May threatened to prevent us going however self contained accommodation for leisure was allowed and we found a well placed Air-B&B in near-by Cookley so all was set.

To the event, four trains and everyone has either an allocated seat or compartment and each set does three round trips with a different loco each time. VIP guest 2999 'Lady of Legend' was joined by home fleet WC no.34027 'Taw Valley, Hall no.6960 ''Raveningham Hall', Ivatt no.43106, 28xx no.2857, Pannier Tank no.7714 double heading with no.813. Spare locos were no.75069 and no.1501 and 75069 would step in for 2999 on the Sunday however she does not feature in this video. For us on Saturday we watched trains at Bewdley, Arley and then Hampton Loade, Sunday we traveled and did two round trips on train 3. I also filmed 34027 at Bewdley Sunday morning and after she was turned Sunday lunchtime again later that day and those clips open and close the video.

The event was brilliantly well run and organised, very safe and so nice to be back out doing something close to normal again. Huge thanks to everyone involved in organising the event!
