In this lecture, Professor Zach Murphy explores the widespread physiologic impact of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) by examining their target organs and the systemic effects they mediate. We begin by reviewing how T3, the more active form of thyroid hormone, binds intracellular nuclear receptors to modulate gene expression across multiple tissues. The lecture then details the hormone’s effects on key target systems: increasing basal metabolic rate in the liver and skeletal muscle, enhancing cardiac output and heart rate via upregulation of β1-adrenergic receptors, and promoting neuronal development and bone growth in the central nervous and musculoskeletal systems.

You’ll also learn how thyroid hormones facilitate lipolysis, gluconeogenesis, and cholesterol metabolism, while increasing gastrointestinal motility and heat production through mitochondrial stimulation and Na⁺/K⁺ ATPase activity.
