When she was just 12 years old, she and some of her friends went on a camping trip in the woods. Isla told her parents that she was staying at a friends house. She went to sleep earlier than the other girls and when she woke up in the middle of the night, None of the other girls was around. She could barely see anything in the darkness and was terrified because the whole point of the wooded adventure was to test their metal against the horror stories of these woods. One of the girls had gotten sick and they didn't see Isla under her sleeping bag. They called one of the girls' sister to come pick them up and finally noticed that Isla wasn't with them. They called Isla's parents and told them as best they could where the camp site was. Isla didn't have a phone. She was too scared to sit down so she hugged a small pine tree and prayed the night would end soon. She heard things moving in the woods around her. Sounds she had never heard before. It seemed like forever to her when she heard another sound but this one didn't scare her. It grew louder and she realized it was her Dad calling her name. She let go of the tree and started yelling "Daddy". It took awhile but he finally found her. He hugged her so hard she thought he was going to break her. He was trembling and crying, not because he was scared of the woods. He was terrified at the loss of his daughter. They finally started walking back towards the car and after awhile, Isla was startled by a figure she could barely make out standing against a tree. "No Isla, it's okay. It's Grandpa". "Granpa?" Isla said. She hugged her grandfather and he hugged her tightly too and started crying. "I'm sorry I couldn't go any farther baby" he said. That broke Isla's heart. This 75 year old man was apologizing for not being able to keep up with her Dad while trudging through the woods in the middle of the night because she had lied. When Isla got home she called her best friend to let her know that she was okay. Her Dad had told her that they didn't mean to leave her. When she finished her conversation, she just stared at the phone and then looked at her parents who were staring at her wondering what happened. "They laughed" "They wondered why I woke them up and they laughed?" After that, Isla was known as a loner. She stayed close to home and started to love taking care of the animals on her parents small farm. She questioned everything to the dismay of her teachers but her parents and grandparents instead of being upset, thought it was funny and courageous and encouraged her to be herself. She learned to play guitar and when she was told by her teachers, "that's not the right way" or by her "why would you put the chorus back to back?" She felt all the more empowered to do it her way and sing about things she thought about in her moments of silence.
