A winter walk with ‪@walkingwithbill‬ along the streets of Beaumaris on Anglesey and past one of Edward's castles he built next to one of his settlement towns such as Conwy and Caernarfon. This town no longer has the wall that was used to protect its citizens. The original Welsh inhabitants of nearby Llanfaes which was an important medieval port and once briefly the capital of Gwynedd were moved on mass by Edward 1st in 1294 to a new town on the other side of the island which is still there; Niwbwrch (Newborough). Before this the town was called Rhos Fair. The town of Beaumaris has buildings from various ages and a pier that was opened in 1846 (rebuilt and extended after a storm in 1872) and once welcomed Steam ships of the "Liverpool and North Wales shipping company". It is now a departure point for tourist trips around nearby Ynys Seiriol (Puffin Island). The castle itself was never completed and is often described as the "Greatest castle never built": this was due partly to Edward 1st running out of money and the Scots causing him trouble in the north. The castle is part of the "ring of steel" around Gwynedd which are now World UNESCO sites.
