U.S. President Donald Trump has rejected Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal to extend the New START nuclear arms control treaty, allowing the last major agreement limiting U.S. and Russian nuclear weapons to expire.

The treaty, signed in 2010, capped deployed strategic nuclear warheads at 1,550 each and permitted only one extension, agreed in 2021 under President Joe Biden. Trump says New START was “badly negotiated” and claims it has been violated, calling instead for a new, modernized agreement.

Russia says it remains open to dialogue, while the United Nations has warned that the absence of a nuclear arms framework is “very dangerous.” Trump has also said he wants any future deal to include China — a proposal Beijing has rejected.

With no treaty now in force, global concerns over nuclear stability and escalation are growing.
