Barbarik Shish Daan, or the offering of his own head, is a prominent narrative from Hindu mythology. According to the Mahabharata, Barbarika possessed exceptional archery skills and had obtained powerful divine weapons from Lord Shiva. He was also known for his unwavering devotion to Lord Krishna.
When the great war of the Mahabharata was about to begin, Lord Krishna wanted to assess the strength of both the Pandavas and the Kauravas. Barbarika, eager to participate in the war, offered his assistance. Krishna, knowing that Barbarika's single arrow had the potential to end the war in a single shot, posed a test to him.
Krishna asked Barbarika how he would support one side while having familial ties to both the Pandavas and the Kauravas. In response, Barbarika revealed his divine ability: his arrows could identify the side with the most merit and automatically move towards it.
To avoid a swift and one-sided conclusion to the war, Krishna made a request of Barbarika. He asked for his head in charity, as this would bind Barbarika to his promise to not support either side. Barbarika agreed and offered his head to Krishna.
Krishna placed Barbarika's head on a hill overlooking the battlefield and blessed him with a boon that he would receive devotion from devotees even without his body. This is why Barbarika is revered as Khatushyamji, and his story of selfless sacrifice and devotion continues to inspire people.
