A rabbi accused of secretly videotaping at least six women changing clothes at a ritual cleansing bath affiliated with his Georgetown synagogue has been released from jail until his next court date.

The rabbi, 62-year-old Barry Freundel, has been charged with six counts of misdemeanor voyeurism. A judge on Wednesday ordered him released from custody pending a Nov. 12 court hearing.

A document filed Wednesday in D.C. Superior Court alleges Freundel set up a recording device disguised as a digital clock radio in the changing and showering area of the National Capital Mikvah, which is affiliated with the Kesher Israel Congregation.

Police said he recorded women on June 2 and Sept. 13 and appears on tape setting up the device.

Emma Schulevitz, 27, of Rockville, Md., was a Judaism conversion candidate in 2012 at Kesher Israel. Her father is Jewish and she says she was always interested in converting. During the process, she said one morning Freundel called and asked if she wanted to do a practice dunk at National Capital Mikvah; she happily agreed.

"The rabbi went with us into the changing room and instructed me to not put anything on the counter in front of the digital clock," Schulevitz said. "I knew something was sketchy. Why not let someone put their belongings on the sink?"

The digital clock, a Sony Dream Machine with a motion sensor inside, is now at the center of the voyeurism allegations against Freundel.

"I feel violated," Schulevitz said.

The congregation's website says Freundel, who has been the rabbi there for more than 25 years, has been suspended without pay.
