The question some people are asking is - is marijuana art?
Well one gallery in San Fransisco thinks it is.
STORYLINE
California is one of 11 states in the US that allows the use of marijuana on medical grounds, but it remains illegal under federal law.
Michele Pred is an artist who wants to open up the debate about the use of the plant, so she decided to grow a plant, or a living art piece, in a gallery in the hope of igniting conversational about cannabis.
In order to make sure the project was legal she obtained a medical marijuana prescription card and growers permit.
But Michele Pred is keen to point out she doesn't use the plant herself, although she did try it once in High School, she says she didn't like it.
The so-called "Pot Art" is part of a larger exhibit called " who's afraid of San Fransisco" featuring political pieces dealing with subjects like immigration and gay marriages.
But the cannabis exhibit would seem to be the star of the show.
Wendi Norris, who's the Gallery Owner, says when people first walk into the gallery one of the initial responses is that the exhibit can't be real.
The gallery says it's had a few complaints but the overall response has been positive.
Michele Pred says in California the majijuana debate is a bit like preaching to the choir but she hopes to spark a debate on a grander scale.
Unlike the rest of the exhibits this piece of art is not for sale.
The 2-foot-high (60-centimetre-high) cannabis plant stands in a plain, plastic pot on a square, white podium.
It is covered by a clear, Plexiglas box with air holes.
On the wall nearby is the artist's medical marijuana card and grower's permit, which she obtained for this project.
Also displayed are buds encased in resin and mounted in petri dishes, which Pred calls "Marijuana Culture." She recently stopped by the gallery to sign a set of three dishes that sold for $1,200 (US dollars).
The show was the idea of gallery owners Raman Frey and Wendi Norris.
