THE CHIEF was a British Crime Television Drama series created by Jeffrey Caine consisting of 35 episodes over 5 seasons broadcast on ITV between 20th April 1990 to 16th June 1995. THE CHIEF was set in the fictional world of Eastland Constabulary with Chief Constable John Stafford (Tim Pigott-Smith) then later Alan Cade (Martin Shaw) following their constant political conflicts with the home office, day-to-day policing and domestic terrorism.
