The Guangzhou Art Museum has moved to its new venue, opened to the public on November 30, 2023.
Located at 198 Yiyuan Road, Haizhu District, near Canton Tower, the building resembles a kapok flower blooming in water. Its twelve “petal” façades are made of solar photovoltaic glass—the world‘s first public building with photovoltaic technology on all five elevations. The design embodies Lingnan style and Guangzhou’s regional character, complementing Canton Tower as a new cultural landmark in the Greater Bay Area.

Entering the hall, the dome first captures your gaze.
Sunlight pours through the vast glass dome, spreading a brilliant circular pool of light on the floor. At its center stands a transparent piano. Not a mere display—people actually sit down and play, spontaneously, one after another.

I circled around it, capturing these moments.
A little girl sat down—fingers barely spanning an octave—and played “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” Adults around her smiled and applauded. A young man in a plaid shirt launched into a fluid jazz improvisation; the whole hall suddenly felt like a café. An elderly man with graying hair played “Jasmine Flower”—slow, unhurried, as if reminiscing. Others just touched the keys, glanced at their reflection in the polished surface, smiled, and walked away.
No one organized it, no one hosted—but the music never stopped. Sunlight streamed down, touching the piano, the floor, the people playing. Those notes floated through the vast space, mingling with footsteps, whispers, children‘s laughter—becoming the museum’s soundtrack.

The new museum is vast—five floors above ground, two below, nearly 80,000 square meters.
The first floor houses the piano area, a gift shop, and a café; the second floor has a reading space where visitors can browse books and art albums; the third and fourth floors feature various galleries displaying the museum‘s collection, modern Guangdong art, and contemporary explorations; the fifth floor is a sculpture promenade. But that afternoon, I spent most of my time on the first floor, circling that piano.

Sunlight streaming through the dome. Music flowing from fingertips.
Those who paused by chance, those impromptu melodies, those strangers briefly connected by music—these moments, too, are art.

Where do we begin to understand a city?
With its art museum—this kapok blossom in water, sunlight through the dome.
With its sounds—piano notes drifting through the hall, improvised, imperfect.
With its everyday—the girl playing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” the elderly man playing “Jasmine Flower,” those who just touched the keys and walked away.

广州美术馆搬到了新馆，2023年11月30日正式开放。新馆位于海珠区艺苑路198号，离广州塔不远，从远处看就像一朵在水中盛放的木棉花。四面十二片“花瓣”型的外立面幕墙，全部采用太阳能光伏玻璃建造，是全球首个五个立面均采用光伏技术的公共建筑。通体设计突显岭南风格和广州地域特色，与广州塔遥相辉映，成为大湾区又一个文化新地标。

走进大厅，先被穹顶震撼。
巨大的玻璃穹顶洒下阳光，在地面上铺开一个耀眼的圆形光斑。就在这个光斑的中心，摆放着一台透明的钢琴。不是摆设，是真的可以弹的——不时有人走上去坐下，即兴弹上一曲。

我绕着它转，拍下这些趣味瞬间。没有人组织，没有人主持，但音乐一直没断过。阳光从穹顶洒下来，落在钢琴上，落在地上，落在弹琴的人身上。那些音符飘在巨大的空间里，混着脚步声、低语声、孩子笑声，成了美术馆的背景音。

新馆很大，地上5层、地下2层，总建筑面积近8万平方米。
一楼有钢琴区、文创店和咖啡区；二楼是闻香识书空间，可以翻阅书籍画册；三楼四楼是各种艺术展厅，展出院藏精品、近现代广东美术作品、当代广东艺术探索等。五楼是雕塑艺术环廊。但那天下午，我大部分时间就待在一楼，绕着那架钢琴转。

阳光从穹顶洒落，音乐从指尖流淌。
那些偶然驻足的人，那些即兴弹起的曲子，那些被音乐短暂连接起来的陌生人——这些瞬间，和墙上的画一样，都是艺术。

我们从何处开始了解一座城市？
从它的美术馆开始——从这朵“水中盛放的木棉花”，从穹顶洒下的阳光。
从它的声音开始——从大厅里飘着的钢琴声，从那些即兴的、不完美的旋律。
