In this Campfire Story, I’m sharing the tale of the time I decided to drive as far north as I possibly could — in the most inappropriate vehicle imaginable: a tiny, low‑slung sports car. I pushed more than 4000 kilometres up the country before the brutal corrugations and the looming monsoon finally convinced me to turn back. But that wasn’t the real story. The real story began when inexperience and blind enthusiasm led me down a remote track, where I ended up hopelessly bogged with the car buried to its axles, no phone reception, no recovery gear, the vehicle perched on a ridiculous incline, and rain and night closing in fast. How I managed to get myself out of that mess is something I’ll never forget — and it’s the moment I realised I absolutely needed a 4WD in my life.

There's nothing better than lighting a campfire out in the bush, and spending the evening sitting around with your mates telling each other stories of your adventures.

Campfire Stories is a series that is all about telling tales of our travels and adventures.
Due to the recent bushfires in Australia when this was filmed, it was impossible to light a campfire, but the spirit of storytelling around campfires lives on. Hopefully future episodes will come to you from around a proper campfire.
