Archives Behind the Scenes - Estrays: The Blenheim convict indent

Archival estrays are records that have left official custody and we’re delighted that this record has been returned to us. This is the Irish indent for the Blenheim, a ship which arrived in Australia carrying around 200 convicts in 1834. An Irish indent was basically the handing over to the authorities, from the Lieutenant-Governor of Ireland, of the custody of those convicts. It's a wonderful document that really explains that official handing over and lists each of the convicts who were on board the ship - their name; their sentence and other details about them.
