Fishing, Most anglers will agree that locating the bait fish schools is often crucial in locating your next fish bite. This is because many smaller bait fish species are living in rivers, lakes, and oceans and these are the main food source for larger fish species. Wherever you may be fishing or whatever you are fishing for, it is the baitfish which are consistently on the menu of predatory fish. There are multiple different baitfish-type lures, including soft plastic flukes, shiny spoons, and hard plastic crankbaits. These lures often wobble side to side, dive, and put off vibration. The crankbait lure is made to dive to different depths. This is a great choice of lure for deeper schooling baitfish and the predatory fish chasing them, including white bass, largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, carp, and bluegill. These species are located here in many Texas lakes. A square bill crankbait is a great option for the shallower, in-shore areas where fish feed several times a year. A larger round bill crankbait is a great option for use in deeper water when the fish are feeding deeper. I use a bladed jig, spinner bait, weighted fluke, sinking swimbait, or a small weighted jig with a baitfish trailer. These will put off flash and some put off vibration. These lures are very versatile and attract many fish, and can be fished in both the shallows or in deeper water by letting the lure fall and using varying speeds or working in a life-like motion. The lure can be worked in a section of the water collumn where schools of baitfish are swimming. Jigging a spoon or any lure that mimicks a wounded or fleeing bait fish can often trigger a fish bite. Trying different lures will likely get you a fish bite once the lure is cast in the strike zone or is chased by a predatory fish species. Targeting a fish species and understanding their behavior is also important. For example, in the spring, largemouth bass enter the spawn. A male largemouth bass guarding a bed of eggs will hit anything near it aggresively in the defense of the bed. Will a largemouth bass or a catfish eat worms, crawfish, frogs, birds, rats, and really anything? Yes, because most predator fish are opportunist. However, the bait fish remains a key staple in the diet of all species of fish within any body of water. More often than not, the baitfish is the most plentiful food source in any body of water.
