In 2025, India is facing an alarming decline in freedom of expression and human rights. Expansive “anti-national” laws are increasingly used to target journalists, activists, filmmakers, and other critical voices. International watchdogs such as Reporters Without Borders (RSF) have ranked India 159 out of 180 in the World Press Freedom Index, warning of a “de facto state of emergency” for independent media. Reports from Freedom House and other global institutions highlight how Hindu nationalist narratives and state-backed pressure have intensified censorship, threats, and discrimination against minorities and dissenters. As a result, India’s tradition of secularism and critical public discourse is under severe strain, leaving very limited safe space for free expression.
