Bipolar disorder is so difficult to diagnose because it is often confused with depression, anxiety disorders, addictions or personality disorders. Misdiagnosed patients may receive inappropriate treatment that will not alleviate their symptoms and may even worsen their physical and mental health condition.

To date, there is no regulatory compliant biological assessment tool, for the diagnosis of bipolar disorder that physicians can use in clinical routine. The diagnosis of bipolar disorder is based on a psychiatric clinical examination of the patient by a specialist using questionnaires and various validated scales.

The diagnosis process is usually long and complex and practitioners are often required to define the right treatment through trial and error. If detected late, this disorder can have very harmful repercussions for the mental and physical health of patients, their caregivers and family in all circles of life.

EDIT-B is a first-in-class, clinically validated, CE marked blood test that can diagnose bipolar disorder from depression in depressed patients by screening for specific biomarkers.

This biological and objective tool complements the various existing clinical scales, whose interpretation is empirical. Technically, EDIT-BTM measures the RNA editing of specific markers in the blood of patients. Alcediag, which developed the test and ensured its clinical and regulatory compliance, uses state-of-the-art Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology coupled with proprietary algorithms developed through artificial intelligence (AI).

EDIT-B(TM) is now available in Italy, and will soon be made available to practitioners and patients in France and Switzerland during 2023, as well as gradually in other countries where Synlab is present (26 countries in Europe in total).
