Pharmacy Guild of Australia National President Trent Twomey says Australia is “only two per cent of the worldwide medicine market", hence the shortage in antibiotic supply.

“These global medicine manufacturers don’t see the Australian market as a priority for them,” he told Sky News Australia.

“Domestic manufacturing obviously is the gold standard … when we have high energy prices, and generally a high cost of production in Australia I don’t think that’s a realistic possibility.”
