STORYLINE:
Violence motivated by an electoral dispute between indigenous communities in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has left at least eight people dead.
State authorities said on Monday that the violence occurred near the town of Santiago Choapan, about six hours from the state capital.
The victims were ambushed by armed men while they travelled on a dirt road.
The aggressors shot at least 8 people, and injured several others, according to authorities.
They lit the trucks on fire before escaping.
"These are the actions of groups that refuse to lose control of their strongholds and are capable going to these extremes, to these regrettable actions that we will face with all the strength of the state," said Irma Pineyro Arias, Oaxaca State's Deputy Governor.
A mayoral election is planned for five municipalities in the region.
A December election was annulled after four of the five townships were not allowed to vote and disputed the results.
Authorities said in a statement on Saturday that an unknown number of people were injured in the violence.
The municipalities are dominated by the Mixe indigenous group.
