Aravindan Neelakandan challenges popular misconceptions about caste and religion in India by showing how Sanatana Dharma has historically opposed birth-based stratification. Contrary to popular belief, it is Buddhism and Jainism—due to their rigid interpretations of ahimsa and moral absolutism—that doctrinally allowed for untouchability in certain contexts. Aravindan cites historical examples of untouchable communities among Buddhists in Japan, Burma, and Sri Lanka.

He further explains how it was Sanatana Dharma and the Bhakti movements that worked toward reintegrating these outcasts, especially through the Vaishnava tradition. Unfortunately, many Western scholars have misinterpreted this reformist inclusivity as regressive.
