The bus window once again frames the city,but this time, the gaze falls upon a most familiar Beijing. An intriguing realization surfaces: when you leave a city and return, the once-ordinary daily life suddenly becomes worthy of recording. After months of wandering in Shenzhen and Guangzhou, the sights once taken for granted in Beijing—the broad avenues, the specific silhouettes of buildings, the rhythm of life on the streets—all acquire a new “photogenic” quality.
And inevitably,the lens also captures the urban scenery unique to that era: the queues for nucleic acid testing. It was once deeply embedded in everyone's daily life, becoming a collective “memory of an epoch.” As the bus moves steadily forward, it passes this time-stamped scene as well as the city's own, more constant pulse.
Where do we begin to know a city?This journey offers a perspective: sometimes, we need a brief “departure” to gain the sense of estrangement and freshness needed for “re-looking.” It is this contrast that allows us to see the textures and expressions truly ingrained in a city's fabric.
