Listen Up!
Here at Black Cat Comics in rockin’ Milpitas, we have two ears and one mouth so we can listen twice as much as we talk! Conflict arises when we don’t listen. Kids get in trouble when they don’t listen to their parents. Workers get in trouble when they don’t listen to the boss. Husbands get in trouble when they don’t listen…well, you get the idea. The opposite is also true. Success happens when we listen. Children learn when they listen to their teachers. Friendships form when we listen to strangers. Businesses succeed when they listen to their customers. And Society succeeds when Governments listen to their citizens. These days we could all stand to listen a little more. The world has a lot of problems, big and small, and none of them are going to be fixed if everyone is talking and no one is listening. Your thoughts are important, and your voice needs to be heard, but the thoughts and voices of others are important, too, even, and maybe especially, when we disagree. Progress comes from compromise, and compromise comes from listening to someone that has different ideas, sharing our thoughts on those ideas, and finding a place for everyone to agree. As we move forward from the Pandemicalypse, let’s try to listen twice as much as we talk. Let’s make an effort to understand the thoughts and feelings of those we might disagree with. If you’re a Marvel person, ask a DC fan what they like best about Comics. If you’re a DC fan, talk to an Indie Comics person about art styles or characterization. When you hear that person’s honest and passionate opinion, it might make you think differently the next time you see a Comicbook from another publisher. And the same concept can work in every other aspect of your life. Take an opportunity to listen this week. What you hear just might change your life forever…
