Eastern gray squirrels, also known as Sciurus carolinensis, prefer dense, mature forests with a continuous canopy of leaves and branches:

Location: Eastern and Midwestern United States, as well as parts of southern Canada

Forest types: Deciduous forests, mixed hardwood forests, and old-growth hardwoods

Trees: Prefer trees that produce food that lasts through winter, such as oaks, walnuts, and pines

Nests: Build leaf nests in the higher branches of large trees, or use tree cavities and holes for raising young

Home range: Each squirrel has a home range of no more than 5 acres

Eastern gray squirrels are also found in urban areas, including parks, yards, and other wooded areas in cities, towns, and suburbs. They can be common in towns and cities, especially near residential bird feeding stations.
