The Interest-Free Student Loan Scheme (IFSLS) is implemented by the Student Loans Division in the Ministry of Education in Sri Lanka. This scheme aims to provide financial assistance to Sri Lankan students who have passed the G.C.E (Advanced Level) examination and wish to pursue selected degree programs at approved non-state higher education institutes.

Eligibility Criteria:
To be eligible for the IFSLS, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Have passed the G.C.E. (Advanced Level) examination in the years 2019, 2020, or 2021.
Obtain simple (S) passes for all three subjects in one sitting (or not exceeding three sittings).
Score a minimum of 30 marks for the Common General Test or re-sit for the Common General Test in 2020 (subject to a maximum of three sittings).
Have a simple (S) pass for General English in G.C.E (Advanced Level) or G.C.E (Ordinary Level) or pass the English and Communication Skills subject in any of the mentioned bridging courses.
Be 26 years of age or below by 7th August 2023.
Application Process:
To apply for the IFSLS, qualified applicants should follow these steps:

Submit the application online between 4th July 2023 and 12.00 p.m. on 7th August 2023.
Selection Criteria:
The selection of students for relevant courses is based on the following factors:
Meeting the minimum qualification requirements.
Applicant preferences for degree courses.
Number of seats allocated for each degree program by the non-state higher education institutes.
When applications exceed the seating capacity, selection is based on the merit order of the Z-score obtained in the G.C.E (A/L) examination.
Loan Amounts:
Under the IFSLS, the maximum loan amounts are as follows:
Rs. 800,800/= for 4-year degree programs.
Rs. 600,000/= for 3-year degree programs.
Stipend loan of Rs. 75,000/=.
Obtaining Loans:
Selected students recommended by the Ministry of Education will have their loan applications processed by the Bank of Ceylon. Loan applicants must submit their application with two guarantors, one of whom should be a parent and the other a close relative. The economic status of the guarantors is not considered for this loan scheme. Payments will be made semester-wise based on the Ministry of Education's recommendations and the student's progress in their studies.

Student Responsibilities:
Students under the Interest-Free Student Loan Scheme must:

Obtain a minimum general pass ("C" pass) for all subjects in the degree program.
Maintain at least 80% attendance during their study hours.
Loan Repayment:
The total loan period is 12 years. Repayment of the loan should start after the study period, with a one-year grace period.
