Lecture-5 We are going to explore and explain various aspects of gravitation as a phenomenon and how newton's law encompasses a vast variety of phenomena starting from a falling apple freely falling body in a gravitational field tidal phenomena planetary motion and even interaction between galaxies and of course artificial satellites this is one of the most important topics for a physics student because this is the first instance of a situation where a fundamental law was discovered a law governing the properties of all kinds of matter was discovered and this had far reaching implications on our understanding of nature of the very nature of physics and our approach to understanding what our universe is and because of that it also had a far reaching implication on philosophy you will not be exposed to all of them in these lectures for that matter even in your classroom but it is good to remember that discovery of law of gravitation is one of the hallmarks one of the high points of the human civilization so with this brief introduction let me get to work so what i am going to do is not to start straight away with gravitation because the very formulation of gravitational law was preceded by major developments.
