Determination of population loss in the past is always a difficult task. In the case of the Jews of Ukraine in the mid seventeenth century this is an extremely difficult task. We only have of the number of Jews who lived there in the early seventeenth century and thus measuring population loss during the Khmelnytsky Uprising requires using indirect methods of estimation. The written sources on population loss suggest numbers that are not realistic. An examination of the process of revival of Jewish communities as well as of the dynamics of life at the time lead one to the conclusion that more moderate estimates are called for.

Shaul Stampfer (1948--) is the Edward Sandrow Professor of Soviet and East European Jewish History and former chairman of the Department of Jewish History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is the author of Lithuanian Yeshivas of the Nineteenth Century: Creating a Tradition of Learning and Families, Rabbis and Education: Traditional Jewish Society in Nineteenth-Century Eastern Europe (both published by the Littman Library).
