This video is a comparison of the Elecraft K3 and Yaesu FT-450D, both receiving identical JT65A signals on 20m in SE Queensland. The receive antenna was split between the two rigs and two instances of JT65-HF were run, both connected to two inputs on the same soundcard (M-Audio Delta44).

Everything was setup to make things the same for both radios and then the result was captured straight off the screen - ie. what you see here. The Yaesu VFO was about 6hz off the K3 - I didn't have the time or inclination to go calibrating the FT-450D.

My conclusion is that there is very little to choose between the two rigs receiving weak-signal JT65A transmissions in a relatively quiet receiving environment. As expected.

Why do the test? Well the K3 is the rig of choice in my shack for all modes - and the FT-450D was a gift to my son and I wanted to see how it compared.

If you are feeling bored and obsessive, watch the whole video because there are subtle differences here and there - but nothing that would make you choose one rig over the other.

I found it pleasing that a budget radio and a premium radio yielded the same results in this test. I wouldn't expect the result to be the same in a noisier or more crowded environment.
