The two new secure microcontroller families, LPC18Sxx and LPC43Sxx, help embedded developers secure application code and data messages in connected applications against threats such as theft and cloning. These microcontroller families add support for secure boot and secure messaging to the long list of advanced control, high-speed connectivity, display, advanced timing, and flexible peripheral features for which the popular LPC1800 and LPC4300 series are known.

Key differentiators of the NXP LCP MCUs include:
Highest-performance LPC MCUs with high-speed connectivity and advanced peripherals
Integration of security features to protect application code and data communications
Can be seamlessly integrated with an NXP A-Series secure element to protect and manage platform credentials and authentication keys

The LPC18S and LPC43S MCU feature high-performance ARM Cortex-M, large internal memories and multiple high-speed and display connectivity. The following features protect data communication and application code:

Hardware-accelerated AES-128 encryption engine for fast bulk encryption
Two 128-bit non-volatile OTP memories for storage of encrypted, hardware-randomized AES keys to prevent cloning
True random number generator for unique key creation
Boot ROM drivers supporting secure boot of authenticated, encrypted firmware image
Code read protection (CRP) prevents unauthorized access to internal Flash

Target segments or applications include:
Energy Metering: Smart grid hub and metering
Industrial: Gateway, controls, instruments, automation
Consumer : IoT, white goods, thermostats
Medical & Fitness - Blood glucose meters and medication tracking

1. Example applications for the Secure IoT Gateway include:
• High-speed encrypted connectivity via Ethernet or WiFi with hardware AES
• Secure boot protects software IP
• TRNG for secure session keys
• Optional smart card chip for enhanced security
• Add an A7 secure element for secure key storage and authentication

2. And for the Smart Meter Communications Hub are
• Secure boot protects code in QSPI
• Fast bulk encryption limits time connected to cellular network
• A7 Series secure element
protects meter against physical attacks attempting to extract or determine keys

In summary, both the LPC18Sxx and LPC43Sxx families integrate an AES-128 encryption engine for fast, secure bulk message transfers; two 128-bit non-volatile OTP memories for encrypted, hardware-randomized key storage to prevent cloning; a true random number generator for unique key creation; and boot ROM drivers supporting secure boot of authenticated encrypted firmware images. The MCUs in both families use high-performance Cortex-M cores, ensuring ample bandwidth for fast bulk data encryption or decryption without slowing down communications. They also include code read protection (CRP) to prevent unauthorized access to internal Flash.
