Welcome to Lecture 6 of the Class 12 Computer Science Quick Revision Series (CBSE 2026)! 🌐🔗

In this video, we simplify Network Topologies & Types—the "Geography" and "Architecture" of computer networks. Instead of learning them in isolation, we group them by Distance (Coverage Area) and Structure (Connection Layout) to help you instantly spot the right answer in your exam.

🎯 Goal: To master the specific range of each Network Type (PAN/LAN/MAN/WAN) and learn which Topology to choose when designing a network layout in Case Study questions.

In this video, we cover:

✅ Types of Networks (Based on Distance):
PAN (Personal Area Network): The smallest range (1-10m). Used for Bluetooth, Hotspots, and connecting personal devices.
LAN (Local Area Network): Covers a building or campus (up to 100m). Used in Home Wi-Fi, School Labs, and Offices.
MAN (Metropolitan Area Network): Covers a city (up to 50km). Examples: Cable TV networks, City-wide broadband.
WAN (Wide Area Network): Global coverage (~50km). Examples: The Internet, MNC offices across countries.

✅ Network Topologies (Physical Layout):
Star Topology: The most popular choice! All nodes connect to a central Hub/Switch. (Reliable, easy to debug, but requires more cable).
Bus Topology: Single backbone cable. (Cheapest/Least cable, but entire network fails if the main cable breaks).
Tree Topology: Hierarchical structure (Parent-Child). Best for expansion across departments.
Ring & Mesh: Brief overview of circular loops and fully connected setups (Most reliable but expensive).

✅ PYQs on Topologies & Types of Networks

📚 Quick Revision Notes:
Cable Layout Question: If a Case Study asks to draw the cable layout, Star Topology is almost always the correct answer (connect every building to the one with the most computers).

Cost vs. Reliability: Bus is the cheapest (less cable). Mesh is the most reliable (no single point of failure).

Distance Key:
Bluetooth/1 room = PAN
School/Office/Building = LAN
Across a City = MAN
Across Countries/Internet = WAN

Exam Tip: When asked to differentiate between topologies, always compare them based on Cost, Reliability, and Scalability. For example, Bus is cheap but hard to expand; Star is expensive but easy to expand.
