Australia were tottering at 12/3 and now require a further 522 runs to win this series opener. Usman Khawaja hung in there late yesterday, but he will have a major role to play. It should be Steven Smith walking out along with him when the fourth day's play resumes.
That was one part of the story. One little part but with plenty of drama. Let us briefly look at the other part, the bigger one, which was the absolute class of the visitors.
Having already kept the Aussies on the floor with an unbeaten 172-run first-wicket stand, Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul came to the moving day and just pushed the Cummins-led side completely out of the fixture. The flamboyant left-hander buried the ghosts of the first innings and broke the record books with his maiden Test hundred. KL, as usual, showed his grit and patience to score a classy half-century, putting a record partnership with Jaiswal.
Then it was the King Kohli show. Indian number 4 was dried up for runs and had not scored a century in the last 16 innings. He showed his great hunger, and batting in Australia just woke him up. He was supported by Jaiswal, Washington Sundar, and then Nitish Kumar Reddy, who had just opened the floodgates. Everyone waited for the 30th Test hundred, and it came with a sweep through backward square. Once VK was allowed to soak in the moment, the 'Temporary Captain' declared the innings at 487/6.
India Playing XI: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Lokesh Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (wk), Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Jasprit Bumrah (c), Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj
Australia Playing XI: Usman Khawaja, Nathan McSweeney, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood
Pat Cummins (Australia Captain): "Yeah, that is right. We were 50-50. The sun hasn't been out. It's okay. Yeah, that is right. Either way, we are pretty happy. Feel fresh and ready to go.
Any format between these two sides has always been fiercely fought. Test matches are even more closely fought. Can't wait to get started.
