The Gothic Line in Borgo a Mozzano
After the Anglo-American landing in Sicily (July 1943), the German command in Italy plans the construction of a fortified line aimed at delaying the advance of the enemy army towards northern Italy.
It is expected that it should extend from the province of Apuania (Massa and Carrara) to the Adriatic Sea, between Marche and Romagna. The real works begin at the beginning of 1944. The territory of Lucca is initially interested with the Media Valle del Serchio near Borgo a Mozzano to then rise again on the Pizzorne plateau: that is the point established where to concentrate the German defence line.
The construction works are carried out thanks to the Todt Organization, which makes use of the work of many men of the area and also of the high Garfagnana, for their experience in the quarries.
In September 1944, after the liberation of Lucca, the German command decided to move the front line by about 20 kilometres to the north, on the Apuan Alps: the fortifications of Borgo a Mozzano, still visible and passable today, are revealed at the practically useless end.
