🌾 Silk Cotton Balls (Kopak) flood the street...
▪︎ (Bombax ceiba) Silk Cotton Tree, Kapok Tree • Hindi: शाल्मली Shalmali, सेमल Semal • Sanskrit: शाल्मली Shaalmali, स्थिरायुः Sthiraayu in Mallow/Bhindi Family (Malvaceae)...😎 Malviya Nagar (New Delhi) ki Bhindi...🤯
Etymology -
• Genus Bombax is likely derived from Greek bombyx, referring to things of 'silk or cotton' and alludes to abundant, silk-like or cottony fibers in fruits.
• Specific Epithet 'ceiba' is a Spanish derivative of a Taino or other Arawakan (South American indigenous languages) name used for a group of large, tropical trees related to Bombax, many of which produce Kapok or silk-cotton in their fruits.
Shalmali or Shalmalee is a Sanskrit word for Silk Cotton tree. Alternatively, it means Lord Vishnu's power.
It is a native tree with large red flowers blooms during January to March. Genus Bombax(8) has eight species in native to India, tropical southern Asia, northern Australia and tropical Africa.
Fruit (size of a ping-pong ball) on maturity appears during March & April. These are full of cotton-like fibrous stuff. It is for fiber that villagers gather semul fruit and extract cotton substance called 'Kopak'. This substance is used for filling economically priced pillows, quilts, sofas etc. Semul is quite a fast growing tree. Its wood when sawn fresh is white in color turns darkish gray later. Used as food plants by larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Leaf-miner (Bucculatrix crateracma) which feeds exclusively on this tree.
