In 1932, Australia welcomed the grand opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

But according to historical reports by National Museum Australia and Australian Geographic, not everyone was happy about how events unfolded.

After 20 years of planning, eight years of construction and at least 16 lives lost, the bridge connecting northern Sydney to the CBD was ready to carry commuters.

Then NSW premier Jack Lang was set to cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony but monarchist Frank de Groot felt the job was one for the King or at least the governor-general. As the ceremony went ahead, de Groot took matters into his own hands, reportedly cutting the ribbon himself with a sword while riding a horse.

De Groot was arrested, fined and removed from the scene while accounts state the ribbon was tied back together for Lang to make another cut and officially open the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
