India and the European Union (EU) are rapidly closing in on a historic Free Trade Agreement (FTA), with Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal announcing from Stockholm that the deal is “within striking distance.” Over half the FTA chapters have already been finalised, and market access negotiations are 90% complete. Non-tariff barriers remain a key issue, but both sides are optimistic. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, speaking at the Brussels Forum, echoed this optimism and stated that the FTA could be concluded by the end of 2025. With strong backing from both Prime Minister Modi and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the India-EU partnership is expanding across trade, mobility, education, security, and more—marking a pivotal moment in global diplomacy.
