There's no "easy" route to Ramsey Peak. / @flynnhikes This one is 15 miles with almost 4,000’ of elevation gain, though a mile of that is because I hiked back and forth from Scotia Canyon rather than starting at the Sunnyside Canyon parking area, and there's probably an extra half mile or so in there due to me walking back and forth to retrieve my tripod.
What are your options for hiking to this peak? Well, pick your poison:
1. Start at Ramsey Canyon Preserve, ~14 miles round trip
Issue: There are time limitations due to the Preserve's hours of operation. Also, there's an entry fee.
2. Start at Bear Canyon, ~14 miles round trip
Issue: There's a long drive on a couple of dirt forest roads that generally aren’t suitable for a passenger car. There's no cell signal along much of the drive and hike.
3. Start at Sunnyside Canyon, ~14 miles round trip
Issue: There's a long drive on a several dirt forest roads that generally aren’t suitable for a passenger car. There's no cell signal along much of the drive and hike.
4. Start in Garden Canyon/Scheelite Canyon Trail on Ft. Huachuca, 10-11 miles
Issue: To reach to the peak you have to leave Ft. Huachuca at or near Gate 2 at the top of Scheelite Canyon Trail. Entering and exiting Ft. Huachuca is authorized only at the three drive-in gates/checkpoints. See 0:39. Also, Scheelite Canyon Trail is unmaintained, very steep, and hard to follow. It's not a pleasant trail, and it's slow-going due to its condition. Here's a link to a video showing this route, but I don't recommend it due to the Gate 2 issue that I mention in my current video: • Ramsey Peak 8,725' | 3rd Highest Peak in t...
DIRECTIONS to the Sunnyside Canyon trailhead: I parked at an informal parking area along the AZT about a quarter mile up Scotia Canyon Rd (FR 4759) and hiked over to Sunnyside Canyon. You can drive to the Sunnyside Canyon trailhead, but it's sketchy at times, especially during monsoon season. The trailhead is at the end of FR 4758 at the gate with the Arizona Trail sign on it.
According to the Trails of the Huachucas trail guide, the ¾ mile-long Ramsey Peak Trail from Gate 2 to the peak "has a number (118) but the trail has not been built." Leonard Taylor's trail guide (2019) and map contain complete, accurate and interesting details about trails in the Huachucas. You can buy them at https://agaveguides.com/ or at Ramsey Canyon Preserve, the Sierra Vista Ranger District Station along Hwy 92 south of Sierra Vista, the Coronado National Memorial, the San Pedro House and the Carr House, on Amazon and at various outdoor stores. Use AllTrails with caution; it contains a lot of inaccurate information about trails in the Huachucas.

A Place Called Sunnyside (1982) by Roberta "Biff" Lamma provides a wonderful history of the small town of Sunnyside. The book is out of print, but you can sometimes find a copy on Amazon.
