"Demand for renewable energy in all countries around the world is driven by economic and environmental concerns. But in Syria, it is an inevitable choice because of the economic conditions and the power shortages. It is a choice that will benefit us more than other countries around the world because renewable energy will contribute to helping solve our energy crisis, which is the result of the war and the sanctions."

"Because of the war in Syria, starting 2011, we have seen the energy sector take a hit because of the destruction created by the terrorist gangs. For example, our energy production before the war in 2011 was about 50 billion kilowatt per hour. Production has dropped by about 60% to about 20 to 25 kilowatt per hour."

"I first installed solar panels at my parents' house, my house and my sisters’ house around eight years ago. Electricity is a necessity and with the power cuts, which are very frequent, it became a necessity to have a source of power. So I installed some solar panels. And about a month ago, we installed some (panels) because we have to at least just have light here to run the mall, so that people can see our products."

STORYLINE:
Just outside of the Syrian capital of Damascus, the rooftops of buildings in Nabek are lined with solar panels.

Syria’s electricity crisis has driven millions out of the grid, forcing many to look for alternative sources of power to warm their homes and keep the lights on.

The need for alternative sources of electricity in the war-torn country has created a boom in the solar panel industry.

On average, Syrians get on around two hours of state electricity a day, making everyday life difficult.
