An 84 y.o. driver survived five days in the desert after crashing by sipping the car's window washer fluid and nibbling on dinner leftovers. Henry Morello also used the car mats as a makeshift blanket to keep himself warm in the freezing night. He staved off boredom by reading his car manual. The pensioner, who suffering from dementia, became confused when he came off the road in Arizona and didn't seek help immediately. Instead he waited it out for five days before coming across some campers who helped flag down a helicopter that was hunting for him. Overnight temperatures the week he was missing fell to between 4℃ and 7℃. Relatives said Mr. Morello was "a survivor" and that's why he had overcome his incredible ordeal. "Our prayers have been answered", said Susan Folts, a friend of the family. "It's a miracle". Mr. Morello, also known as "Grandpa Hank", went missing on February, 7 when he drove off from his home in Phoenix in a pale green LEXUS. He crashed in the Bloody Basin area when he came off Interstate 17 and, without his medication and in a state of mental confusion, decided to wait it out. It appears the pensioner missed his exit, went down 17 miles of dirt road and had the accident. Friends said he kept himself alive by using a napkin to strain windshield wiper fluid from the vehicle to keep himself hydrated. "He took a rock and opened the hood of his car and broke the windshield wiper fluid and was using that with a napkin to keep himself hydrated", said James Sheehan. Friend Randy Felts added: "It was cold in the evenings so he laid in the sun during the day, and never left his vehicle". Relatives feared the worst and spent five days scouring the area before a helicopter picked him up on February, 11. He was taken to hospital but is expected to make a full recovery. Mr. Sheehan added that to survive five days in the desert was "just Hank being Hank". After this accident, his relatives banned him from going on any more trips to the desert
